Nga mihi mahana ki a koutou whanau

Hope you have made the most of summer because its getting cooler now. There have been lots of amazing summer events here and has been exciting to see people of all different cultures dressed up in costumes singing, playing their musical instruments and dancing with their drums. So many countries cry out in vain for peace and here we are here in New Zealand, living it and breathing it, without even noticing it?

This month we will look at how meditation and breathing can change our brain waves and effect healing for us. We will look at the four brain waves and the important aspects of the theta brain waves in healing.

I was very fortunate to be taught meditation in my twenties by Greg Sneddon a music composer in Australia. I had begged and pleaded with him to teach me meditation until he finally gave in. After about a year of lessons, my new flatmate dropped to the floor and backed out of the room backwards bowing to him the whole time. As you can imagine, I was a bit confused and a little embarrassed that she did this. After he left, my flatmate told me that my humble friend was in fact a Budhist monk of the highest order. When I asked him why he hadn't told me, he simply said 'You never asked.'

It isn't hard to learn how to meditate and most of us are doing it already without realizing it. It does take regular practice at first though and involves deep breathing to slow down the heart rate and of course the brain waves. The mind is so busy, endlessly thinking, analyzing, criticizing, judging, interpreting...etc. Meditation releases us from this reality to an array of infinite possibilities; oneness with nature, colors, healing, and astral traveling etc. An old Indian medicine woman at the Indigenous Womens health health hui once asked me if I wanted to see where she went to when she was unable to take any more pain. I took her outstretched hand, closed my eyes, then went into the theta brain wave. When I saw a beautiful waterfall, she encouraged me to keep looking and then lo and behold, all the colors of the rainbow appeared to me. On telling her this, she squeezed my hand tightly and said, 'That's where I go to when the pain gets too much.'

Similarly, the late Papa Delamere explained the journey to the 'whatumanawa' as an eternal and infinite journey. He urged us to master neutrality - a place of nothingness where inhibitions or judgments do not exist in order to remain in the whatumanawa 24/7. In today's modern terms, this is known as the theta brain wave.

Lets explain the four brain waves; beta, alpha, theta and delta.

The beta brain wave is when we are awake and in some form of activity.

The alpha brain wave is when we are awake but in a more relaxed state similar to a light meditation or a day dreaming state. Creative visualization and auto suggestion techniques are done in the alpha state.

The theta brain wave is the ultimate of brain waves. Greg said the purpose of meditation for the budhist monk was to attain a state of higher consciousness by remaining in the nothingness through each and every moment of being. In order to perform psychic activities that are associated with creativity, dreams and the extra sensory gifts of perception we need to be in this brain wave. There are so very many rituals that are carried out in this brain wave in the Maori culture, like for instance, karakia tawhito, moteatea, whakairo, taiaha, mirimiri, romiromi, karanga and even raranga. Have you ever had hours of sleepless nights where sensation, emotions and memories of old come to the fore? Well, you are in the theta brain waves whether you like it or not. Our deepest secrets can be stored in here to block out anything we may not be prepared to deal with at the time. Often when I am in the theta brain wave, a purple energy surrounds me. Whaea Rose (Turuki Rangimarie Rose Lambert-Pere) talked about this violet energy as belonging to the left brain energy of Tumatauenga - the keeper of the violet flame and the kaitiaki of the male side of our being. I used to get these two mixed up, so Whaea Rose used to get my hands and place them on my temples and then to the corresponding sides of my body so I wouldn’t forget. I never said I was the smartest cookie in the cookie jar whanau? Anyway, she said the right brain energy belonged to Rongo - the female twin flame of Tumatauenga and the kaitiaki of the feminine more spiritual aspects of our being.

The delta brain wave is when we are unconscious and in a deep sleep. It is very slow and is a place to learn to consciously explore our dreams. Astral projection or out of body experiences happen in the delta brain wave. I remember when I was in my twenties, I could literally see myself flying home to NZ from Australia to visit my parents house because I was mokemoke. I didn't know what astral traveling was, I just wanted to go home but couldn't afford it. My mother recalls that each time I did this, the locked front door would open on its own so that's how they knew that I had returned home to see them in spirit.

Maree Moselen is an alkaline specialist who supports people to become more alkaline and experience the benefits of reducing acidity in the body. She promotes the use of coconut oil. I would love a booklet on coconut oil Maree but your email address was not valid. Pease send another email address.

While we are grateful for one season, we witness the beginning of another. Blessing to you all.
