Kia Ora Whanau
I trust the winter has been kind to you and your whanau. This month, we will look at some supplements and foods that help with colds and coughs. Koka Rose Pere hosted a wananga at the infamous Waikaremoana lake retreat which was an awesome experience so keep reading. Grandmother Sky Weaver from the USA came to visit us in Wellington last month and her theme was the divine feminine and divine masculine energies. Atarangi Muru, our very own traditional Maori healer who travels the globe is having a wananga in Auckland this month so read on for more details.
Try to drink 2 - 3 litres of water when you are sick and take 1000 to 2000mg of Echinacea and Vitamin C per day. This will make a huge difference to your immune system. New World has 500 mg tablets of Echinacea and Vitamin C tablets for $16. Health shops charge up to $39 for Echinacea. Check the mgs per tablet on the bottle. If it doesn't specify the mgs per tablet then don't buy it as this is not good value. Remember the sauna or hot pools will sweat out poisons in your system but you need to drink plenty of water to flush the body and keep hydrated.
According to the Healthy food guide, citrus fruits can lessen the effects of colds. Garlic has allicin which shortens the duration of colds and makes them less likely to happen. Chilli, dried or fresh can open up nasal passages and airways. Green tea produces cells that fight off illness from bacteria and viruses. Clear chicken soup works well for coughs as it contains anti-inflammatory properties which serve to melt the mucus in your chest. Tuna and salmon contain Vitamin D which helps respiratory infections and asthma. Beef and lamb or almonds (if you don't eat meat) are high in zinc which are important for the production of immune cells. Soak the almonds overnight though then peel them in the morning and chew thoroughly before swallowing as they are hard to digest.
It was wonderful to link in to the energies at Kopu Ariki in Waikaremoana with Turuki Rangimarie Rose Marie Lambert-Pere. The dawn ceremony was exhilarating in barefoot feeling the pulse of our earth mother and the karanga by Awhitia to our Atua Wahine over the mountains was so moving. The waka launching on the lake ceremony was about forgiveness and linked into our divine feminine and divine masculine energies. Tena Koe Rangatira Wahine!
Grandmother Sky Weaver, a Cherokee elder from the USA came to the nation of Waitaha hui where 36 different cultures of grandparents gathered in peace on marae in Auckland. She came to Wellington to balance the divine feminine energies with the divine masculine energies so as to maintain the future of our mokopuna. It was quite touching to see her insight and profound wisdom when working with the children of the elements and her presence alone bought many realisations and revelations for our whanau and friends here. Many blessings on your journeys Grandmother Sky Weaver.
