Hope you are looking forward to the Easter holidays. In Palmerston North last weekend we went to the Festival of Cultures. Te Wananga o Aotearoa are developing a nationwide Hau Ora programme. Kawakawa bodywraps draw out poisons and clean wounds. Keep reading and I will tell you all about it.
Indigenous people from all around the world were dressed in an array of traditional attire at the Festival of Cultures last weekend. A group of Islamic men were clapping in rhythm while their koroua was dancing with a staff in his long white gown and head piece. The many different aromas and flavours were wonderful to smell and taste. The Pacific Curls group sang one song about the pulse of Papatuanuku and the rhythm of Tawhirimatea using poi. It brought me to the realisation that we all share the pulse of our earth mother and everyone present there were celebrating each others uniqueness, accepting one another for the magnificent beings that we are.
Nga mihi to our Maori universities for the wonderful work they have been doing with Maori and even non Maori in some cases to empower them to be all that they can be. I think sometimes we forget that other learning institutions have different values until we get a rude awakening. Over the last few years I have studied at the Naturopathic College in New Plymouth. Just recently the British education manager said it was inappropriate behaviour for me to speak Maori to a Maori client while doing bodywork. I thought that only happened in my Nanny's day and my Auntys school days! My client and I were talking about how massage i te ao pakeha meant lots of paperwork just to explain one physical ailment - (the tutor said that you make more money out of the client only working one ailment at a time and can make 6 more visits before moving on to the next ailment). This is in contrast to Maori healing which uses matekite - spiritual intuitive diagnosis to identify the c
ause of the mamae sitting on the cellular memory of the body after which one would work all ailments in one session. Hei aha te moni? Koka Rose Pere says the Tohunga of the He creates a dependence while the Tohunga of the Ha empowers whai-ora to remember who they truly are and empowers them to be all they can be. Long time coming for our Maori universities to develop a nationwide Hau Ora programme that will include Maori healing and Rongoa. Kia Kaha Te Wananga o Aotearoa.
Bodywraps are like a focused mini sauna. Exercise lightly before wrapping so the blood is circulating well through the body and can pump out the poisons when wrapped. To begin with, you will need to cut a clean towel into long strips about the width of a bandage. Roll the toweling up tight like a bandage then place into a pot of boiled kawakawa. Have 3 - 4 fresh leaves to dip into boiling hot water before placing the flat side down on the wound. Squeeze the toweling strips tightly while water is still hot to touch then wrap around the fresh leaves that are covering the wound. Quickly wrap gladwrap to cover the toweling while it is still hot starting at the top and working down. Not too tight though or it will hurt. Tuck in the edges of the wrap to make it airtight. Once the wrap is sealed, lay down for 2 hours and cover with a blanket. This is also effective with edema. The open wound unit at the Hastings hospital wanted to know what I had used as none of th
eir medication could get the same result. Simply kawakawa. Email me if you have any questions.
